The Ice Cube

$72.00

The ice cube is a new collection based on an initial happy accident. I melted some larger chunks of leftover glass pieces at a low temperature and really enjoyed their organic shape and look of a melting ice cube. I explored this process further by adding elemental grains(frit or glass powder) to pieces of sheet glass. These pieces are created by sifting powders, capturing them in sheet glass and combining 9 layers of glass in a casting. To cast glass, you must create a mold around the glass so it does not melt and puddle. The casting is polished on a wet belt sander and cut by saw into equal parts. Finally each piece is fired a fourth time and a 1/4 inch hole is drilled into each one. I love the beauty and simplicity of the elemental glass in this piece and the perceptual distortion it creates on closer viewing.

I imagine these pieces singly as a unique gift for a friend’s desk, night table or in a group for a special event such as a wedding. It can hold a single dried or fresh grass or ornamental flower, even a pretty herb such as lemon thyme. Your imagination is the limit. Currently this piece comes with a dried white bunnies tail.
