Knobs and Pulls
Handmade fused glass knobs are my specialty. The pieces are made using 3-4 layers of fusible glass. The glass is cut from sheet glass or sifted in powder form and melted in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 1200F-1500F. Some knobs and pulls require one fusing while others are fired multiple times. With most knobs you will notice that a clear layer is often used on top of or in between layers to create a sense of depth. The use of various temperatures creates different effects, ranging from a single one-dimensional look to a three-dimensional look.
Knobs are approximately 1 1/2” in diameter. Pulls are approximately 5” x 3/4” in length.
Tiles are made using fusible glass or powders. The glass is cut from sheet glass or sifted in powder form and melted in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 1200F-1500F. Some tiles are etched as well as fused. Most tiles are fused a minimum of two times and are at least two layers thick.
Most tiles come in the following sizes: S: 2”x 2”, M: 3”x3”, L: 4”x4” unless otherwise indicated.
Fused glass sinks come in a variety of designs. Many techniques are used to complete a wide range of processes. Some sinks are made using cut glass, glass powders or glass paste. Other sinks are created using the kiln carving technique or many pounds of scrap glass that has been meticulously cut and cleaned and carefully placed to create a pleasing design. The firing processes for the sinks is long and slow.
Centerpieces are meant to be works of art that are both functional and decorative in nature. Most are larger pieces that are created to draw attention and be a focal point in ones home or business. Designs and techniques vary greatly. In general each piece requires multiple firing and many are one-of-a-kind. These pieces while decorative, can also serve as functional accents for special occasions.
The small dishes are made using many of the same techniques as you will find used in the larger pieces. I often start by creating new designs on a small dish. Some small dishes are part of the centerpiece collections while others stand alone. They can be used by your bedside for jewelry placement, at the table for sauces or as an accent in the bathroom for soap.
Flower accents are small eight petaled flowers that can be used as stand alone table accents or as tea lights. They come in marbeled white, red or purple. The petals are cut by hand and on a saw. The center is fired separately and added in a second firing. In a third firing they are slumped into or over a mold.
Occasionally I am driven to make decorative sculptural pieces. These pieces are often more time consuming. They often involve numerous firings and generally the designs have developed over considerable time.
As with all handmade items there will be slight variations in the pieces. However when completing a large order of knobs for example I will use the same sheet and fire the order in one firing so as to create as much consistency as possible in their overall look.
