Inextricably Linked
This piece is inspired by mycelium and the healing powers of mycelium. Mycelium is a rootlike structure of a fungus that has thread like branches. A mycelium can be very small or grow thousands of acres. It helps break down plant matter and improves water and nutrient absorption of plants and additionally helps in removing chemicals from the soil. The chain signifies our relationship and connection to mycelia and other elemental structures that support our life here on earth.
This glass casting was made using sifted glass and many layers of clear glass to encase the sifted glass powders and to create visual depth. These, layers were then combined in a mold and cast. Extensive coldworking takes place thereafter using a flat lap grinder. Finally, the piece was sand etched to create a slightly matte finish.
The glass chain was flameworked on a torch. Each link is individually made and connected to the next link. The chain was then sand etched and retired to seal the surface.
