Hanging by a Thread

$6,200.00

This is my latest wall sculpture. It is made up of three kiln-formed rondelles with flame worked glass chain that goes from one piece to the next. Hanging by a thread is inspired by the healing powers of mycelium in the soil. Mycelium is made up of a network of threads in the soil that help ecosystems with the transfer of water, nitrogen, carbon and other nutrients. To create a more sustainable future we must support the planet with better practices so that we can encourage the spread of mycelium networks that support the planets ecosystem.

Process: These pieces were made by sifting and manipulating glass powders which were then fired into a network. I then capped the glass lace with sheet glass in a second firing. In a third firing a background layer was added and in a fourth firing the edge was created and fired. Finally the pieces were fired over a shallow convex mold. The glass chain was flame worked with each link created one at a time.
