Kiln-Carving

Every Drop Counts bowl with a backdrop of glass blanks ready for kilncarving designs.

Kiln-carving is a glass technique developed at Bullseye Glass, a leader in glass production. Kiln-carving is the process of creating relief, or texture in fused or cast glass design. With the Every Drop Counts bowl, I first cut two double layers of sheet glass, which are then fired into a solid glass blank. My next step is to create a kaleidoscope of different water droplet patterns that are carefully cut and rounded from, ceramic fiber paper. This fiber which comes in varying thicknesses, tolerates high kiln temperatures. It allows each piece to be it’s own unique piece of art. In addition the way the the relief captures light throughout the day, reflecting droplets on the surface below, provides endless fascination.
