Glass Hart evolved from a passion for glass and a desire for functional art.
Growing up in Norway as a child I was inspired by the beauty of the colorful “nordlys” or northern lights. The reflections it emitted on the landscapes snowy canvas always fascinated me. In much the same way, glass is my canvas; colored glass when caught by natural light reminds me of the shimmering northern lights.
Each home accent is created with attention to detail as an art form, while also considering it’s feel and function. Glass has the power to be both a serious as well as a playful medium. The unique atmosphere created when glass captures and reflects natural light entering a room is unsurpassed. My hope is that by bringing you these glass accents that you too will experience the beauty of glass and the vibrancy it can bring to your home or business.
Handmade fused glass knobs and pulls are my specialty. The pieces are made using 3-4 layers of Bullseye glass, The glass is cut from sheet glass or sifted in powder form and melted in a kiln between 1385F and 11450F. Some knobs and pulls require one fusing, while others are fired multiple times. With most knobs you will notice that a clear layer is often used on top of or in between design layers to create a sense of depth. The use of various temperatures creates different effects as well, ranging from a simple one dimensional look to a more 3 dimensional look. The hardware chosen does not cover the glass completely. This allows natural light entering a room, to penetrate and reflect off each glass piece.
Tiles are made in a similar way to the knobs and pulls. Some of the designs are interchangeable. Tiles come in 2 inch,3 inch and 4 inch sizes. The tiles are fused and/or fused and etched. As with the knobs and pulls most are fired a minimum of twice and are multiple layers thick.
Fused glass sinks come in a variety of designs. Many techniques are used to complete a wide range of processes. Some sinks are made using cut glass, glass powders or glass paste. Other sinks are created using the kilncarving technique while others are made using many pounds of scrap glass that has been meticulously cleaned and carefully placed to create a design. The firing processes for these sinks is long and slow.
Centerpieces are meant to be works of art that are both functional and decorative in nature. Most are larger pieces that are created to draw attention and be a focal point in ones home or business. Both designs and techniques vary greatly. In general each piece requires multiple firings and many are one-of-a-kind. These pieces whlile decorative, can also serve as functional accents for special occasions.
